Definition of Irony…

On its December 8 edition of Morning Edition, NPR ran a piece on the impact of the current economic troubles on Chinese factory workers. The slowing of imports into the US has led to significant dismissal of factory workers in China.

As the US economy slows, laid off workers in our capitalist society are supported by unemployment insurance, clearly a socialist institution. Chinese workers who fall victim to this economic situation, on the other hand, face dismissal without the benefit of government support.

This is interestingly ironic in that the capitalists are taking advantage of a socialist ideal while the communists are faced with a market-driven economic outcome. Clearly, there are no pure economic systems any longer.

Did Bush Save Us?

In her letter to the Salem, Oregon Statesman-Journal, published December 7, 2008, (Thank President Bush for keeping U.S. safe), Diana Powers Evans of Salem suggests that we owe President Bush our thanks for our safety. This is ridiculous.

Bush has kept us safe from what? While we’ve heard lots of assertions that we’ve been protected from near-constant terror attacks, we’ve no evidence this is true. And, while the President and his team were earning our undying gratitude for our supposed safety, they were raiding the treasury for their adventures and allowing others to exploit the inherent wealth of the nation.

Those who would credit the President for our safety deserve the fees and interest on this account. For my part, I’m not ready to take on this particular charge account.
